Taking a team-based approach at a medical practice may sound like a simple matter, but there’s more to it than meets the eye. Today, a group of physicians brought together by Regence BlueCross BlueShield discussed the logistics and advantages of care coordination. The insurer hosted the Regence Care Coordinator Academy, a two-day training and networking event in Portland to help front-line staff develop skills for coordinating patient care, especially for the most complex cases that may result in ER visits and hospitalizations.

“From our perspective as a health plan, we have a real dilemma,” said Sean Karbowicz, director of innovation and pharmacy policy at OmedaRx, Regence’s pharmacy benefits manager. “We want to ensure patients that do have pain have access to effective therapies and also help prevent and mitigate unnecessary use. The physicians are often in a difficult situation. Their patients are suffering and they have limited tools in the toolbox. Medications are one of the things physicians think about. The dilemma occurs when they become too heavily reliant on that one tool.”
