Toward the end of each year, many of us make resolutions to help improve our health and wellbeing.

The most common annual goals include eating better, choosing healthier foods, or exercising more. Change is often difficult and, regardless of the resolutions you plan to make for 2020, Regence’s Behavioral Health Medical Director Dr. Jim Polo says that the key to success is making sure you’re ready to do something different.

Dr. Polo’s top tips for jumpstarting 2020 resolutions include:

  • Set realistic goals: A weigh loss goal of 5 pounds a month is much more realistic than aiming for a 50-pound weight loss without a timeframe
  • Create a plan: Change isn’t just going to happen. Be specific about what you are trying to achieve and create a plan that can help get you there.
  • Consistency: Often the change we want takes longer than we expect, so consistent action over time is key.
  • Team up: Healthy competition can help keep you on track with your goals.
