What to know about the Blue Cross of Idaho privacy breach

On April 12, Blue Cross of Idaho announced a privacy breach resulting in the disclosure of some member information.

According to Blue Cross of Idaho, the incident also affects some members of other Blue plans who received care in Idaho and had their claims processed by Blue Cross of Idaho.

Blue Cross of Idaho and Regence BlueShield of Idaho are separate companies. While Regence’s system was not affected in any way, some members from our Oregon, Washington and Utah Blue plans were impacted. We believe and are confirming they received care in Idaho and their claims were routed through Blue Cross of Idaho instead of through Regence BlueShield of Idaho.

According to Blue Cross of Idaho, exposed information includes name, enrollee/subscriber number, date of service, health care provider name, the provider’s patient account number, claim number, claims payment information and procedure code. The information does not include Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, banking or credit card numbers or information about medical diagnoses.

We understand the worry and concern that an incident like this causes. We are working with Blue Cross of Idaho to ensure our affected members have the information and support they need. Blue Cross of Idaho is formally notifying affected members and offering three years of identity protection services.

Collectively, Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies remain committed to doing everything we can to ensure the security and privacy of our members’ information.
