When disaster strikes, Regence is here to help you access the care you need
Summer can bring a range of natural disasters and emergencies, from wildfires and smoke to severe storms and extreme heat. If an emergency affects your community, we’re here to help you access the care, medications and support you need so you can focus on staying safe and healthy.
Accessing medications during an emergency
If you have been displaced due to an emergency and don’t have the medications you need to stay healthy, help is available. Pharmacy customer service is available 24/7 and can help answer questions about your prescription coverage and options for accessing medications.
Refilling important prescriptions during an emergency
If a state of emergency has been declared in your area, you may be able to refill prescriptions at any pharmacy, even if it is out of network. Refill restrictions may be waived during officially declared emergencies, and we’ll work with your provider to resolve questions and secure any needed authorizations.
If your usual pharmacy is closed or inaccessible because of an emergency, we can help you locate another nearby pharmacy with your medications in stock. We’ll work with you, your doctor and the pharmacy to help ensure you continue receiving the care you need.
If you need assistance, call the number on the back of your member ID card. You can also chat with us online through your member account.
Getting emergency medical care during a disaster
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, go to the nearest hospital or call 911. Emergency services will be covered at the in-network benefit level, even if the hospital is outside your plan’s provider network.
For non-emergency care, especially when travel is difficult or unsafe because of a disaster, consider virtual care options. Sign in to your member account to learn more about virtual care services available to you.
Managing ongoing care management needs
Natural disasters and emergencies can disrupt daily routines and limit access to health care and pharmacies. While it may feel intuitive to stockpile medications, we do not recommend storing large quantities for long periods. Some medications expire quickly or require specific handling and storage. We cannot guarantee the safety or effectiveness of medications stored for extended periods.
Instead, plan ahead by:
- Making a medication list. Write down the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take regularly, including dosages. Keep your list and contact information for your doctors and pharmacies in a waterproof container.
- Carrying your member ID card or downloading the Regence app so you can quickly access your information if you need to evacuate.
- Refilling medications as soon as you are eligible. Consider ordering an extended supply, such as up to 90 days, through home delivery or retail pharmacies.
- Keeping medications together in their original containers with original labels and storing them in a waterproof container.
- Preparing for special medication needs. If your medication requires refrigeration or electronic equipment, have a backup plan in case of power outages or evacuation.
- Sharing your medication disaster plan with your doctor. If your child takes medication, share the plan with their school or daycare as well.
Managing ongoing care management needs
If you work with a care manager because of a chronic or complex condition and have been displaced by an emergency or expect to evacuate, contact your care manager as soon as possible. You can also call the number on the back of your member ID card so we can help support continuity of care.
