SALT LAKE CITY – Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah recently announced that Sebastian De Freitas has joined its “consejeros Latinos” team. The consejeros (concierges) are bilingual and bicultural representatives who offer customer service and support tailored for Regence’s Spanish-speaking members.
“As a consejero Latino, my job is to act as a guide to the health care system for our Spanish-speaking members, provide support to businesses with large Latino populations, and serve as a health care resource for the Latino community as a whole,” said De Freitas,. “I try to break down the linguistic and cultural barriers that make it difficult for many Latinos to understand the U.S. health care system.”
De Freitas was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, and moved to Salt Lake City seven years ago. He is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and has more than 10 years of customer service experience. Before joining the Consejeros Latinos program, De Feitas worked in Regence’s customer service department. He has also worked in customer service at Royal Caribbean Cruises, Comcast and Capital One.
“The health care system is complex for everyone, but members who aren’t fluent in English face additional challenges,” said De Freitas. “As an immigrant myself, I understand those challenges and, I remember what a big adjustment accessing the health care system was when I moved here.”
