Leadership “Best of Blue” acknowledges efforts

Regence has long advocated for solutions to combat rising health care costs. As we have worked to make health care costs and options clearer, one person in particular has advocated passionately for transparency: Brodie Dychinco. His efforts were recognized at the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association Summit in Orlando, Florida in September with the “Best of Blue Inter-Plan Solutions Richard L. Guffey Leadership award.”

Since 2008, Brodie has led teams that developed transparency tools now used by more than 10 Blue plans with members across the country. His contributions in setting a national transparency standard and roadmap for the Blues, as well as his support of the plans implementing Regence’s transparency solutions earned him the honor of being only the 12th recipient of the Guffey award.

“The Blue plans work hard to collaborate on best practices and lessons learned to advance solutions to health care issues,” said Dychinco. “This award was in recognition of our entire team’s successes in sharing our philosophy, approach, and tools with other Blue plans. Our efforts bring to patients nationwide options that allow them to share their health experiences with other members, research the quality and costs of the medical care they need, and chat virtually with other consumers about their health care interests.”

In spring, Regence was recognized by Forrester Research, Inc. (Case Study: Regence Cracks the Transparency Code, Forrester Research Inc., April 12, 2012) for its unique transparency approach and solutions, and is very happy to receive this recognition from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, as well.

Among the Regence-developed consumer transparency solutions shared with other Blues plans under Dychinco’s leadership are:

  • Patient Reviews tool that enables patients to rate their health care experiences with facilities and providers
  • Cost Estimators that empower consumers to know and compare their out of pocket responsibility for treatment options before they go
  • Provider Search tool that lets consumers search for providers based on factors that matter to them, such as quality measures and demographics
  • My Blue Community health and wellness social network where members can gather to share their experiences, as well as give and receive support from peers and experts in the community

Each year, the Richard L. Guffey Leadership award recognizes one individual across the 39 Blue Plans for leadership excellence and advancing health care transformation.
