Regence BlueShield of Idaho has named Daniel Meltzer, M.D., as its executive medical director. Based in Boise, Dr. Meltzer will lead Regence’s statewide health care affordability, quality, service and access initiatives for members through engagement with key employers and providers.

Dr. Meltzer has an extensive clinical and administrative leadership background and joins Regence from Matrix Medical Network in Scottsdale, AZ, where he served as chief medical officer and senior vice president. Previously, Dr. Meltzer was Chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine and chair of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program for Kaiser Permanente in San Diego. He also works as a clinically active emergency physician and float physician in the Treasure Valley. He has co-authored multiple articles and book chapters and has delivered many professional lectures.

“Dan brings a passion to excel and improve to everything he does,” said Mark Ruszczyk, president of Regence BlueShield of Idaho. “His boots-on-the-ground experience with the workings of health care in Idaho and strong community ties will be invaluable as he leads our efforts to transform health care to become easier, more people-centered and economically sustainable.”

“In this time of such profound change in the way health care is delivered, we’re fortunate to have a physician/administrator of Dan’s caliber join our team. As we continue to work together with providers to expand the reach of value-based care arrangements, I’m confident Dan will be a tireless advocate for quality and affordability on behalf of our members,” said Drew Oliveira, M.D., senior executive medical director at Regence.

“I’m excited about joining Regence and broadening my scope of responsibilities,” said Dr. Meltzer.  “I am particularly interested in the innovation and improvement possibilities we can pursue at Regence and with our health care systems in Idaho.”
